UnGodly Hocus Pocus

Can Christians, through prayer, change the purpose of an idol, from that which is bad to something which is good, and is it scriptural?

Just when I thought I’d heard it all folks….I have one for you that takes the cake for now.

We have a large statue in our city which was made by and Indian, and stands at the fork of the two rivers running through our city. It is called "The keeper of the plains" and has its hands raised heaven ward.
It has… up until now been considered by Christians in this city to be an vain idol.
Recently a certain group of prayer “so called” intercessors went and prayed by the statue and now claim that this statues purpose has been divinely changed and it now worships the one true God.

Now folks this is not made up. Does this all sound too daft (idiotic) or is it just me?

Now tell me some one, first of all how does a lump of metal have any ability to worship anything in the first place?

This for me is on par with an incident that took place here back in the early 1990’s, when a woman who had been given an account of the mark of the beast, went to her priest seeking counsel as to what she should do in the circumstance that she took the mark of the beast, he told her not to worry because he could just absolve her of that.

Now folks I am telling you we have some loon’s running our chicken houses these days. Our so called "spiritual superiors" have simply forsaken the written word of God and are making their own doctrines. I don’t know what “spirit” these people are listening to but honey it’s not the Holy Spirit of God.
Honey I don’t care if you take your statues and baptize them in the river Jordan, they are not going to be clean and they are not going to be accepted by God as HOLY ENOUGH TO WORSHIP HIM…HELLO

First of all let’s check the Scriptures:

Leviticus 26:1-2
Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land
, to bow down unto it: for I am the LORD your God.
2Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the LORD.

Oh so God is not for idols, or graven images.
What did God say He was going to do with the idols of Egypt, change their purpose?

Ezekiel 30:6-19
Thus saith the LORD; They also that uphold Egypt shall fall; and the pride of her power shall come down: from the tower of Syene shall they fall in it by the sword, saith the Lord GOD.
7And they shall be desolate in the midst of the countries that are desolate, and her cities shall be in the midst of the cities that are wasted.
8And they shall know that I am the LORD, when I have set a fire in Egypt, and when all her helpers shall be destroyed.
9In that day shall messengers go forth from me in ships to make the careless Ethiopians afraid, and great pain shall come upon them, as in the day of Egypt: for, lo, it cometh.
10Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will also make the multitude of Egypt to cease by the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon.
11He and his people with him, the terrible of the nations, shall be brought to destroy the land: and they shall draw their swords against Egypt, and fill the land with the slain.
12And I will make the rivers dry, and sell the land into the hand of the wicked: and I will make the land waste, and all that is therein, by the hand of strangers: I the LORD have spoken it.
13Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will also destroy the idols, and I will cause their images to cease out of Noph; and there shall be no more a prince of the land of Egypt: and I will put a fear in the land of Egypt.
14And I will make Pathros desolate, and will set fire in Zoan, and will execute judgments in No.
15And I will pour my fury upon Sin, the strength of Egypt; and I will cut off the multitude of No.
16And I will set fire in Egypt: Sin shall have great pain, and No shall be rent asunder, and Noph shall have distresses daily.
17The young men of Aven and of Pibeseth shall fall by the sword: and these cities shall go into captivity.
18At Tehaphnehes also the day shall be darkened, when I shall break there the yokes of Egypt: and the pomp of her strength shall cease in her: as for her, a cloud shall cover her, and her daughters shall go into captivity.
19Thus will I execute judgments in Egypt: and they shall know that I am the LORD.

God cleans house, he doesnt just paint over folks ...he comes as a destroyer of idols.

Now what did Asa say to his mom when she made an idol, oh now mom you should do that, lets just pray over this thing and it will then worship God?

1 Kings 15:9-13
And in the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel reigned Asa over Judah.
10And forty and one years reigned he in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Maachah, the daughter of Abishalom.
11And Asa did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, as did David his father.
12And he took away the sodomites out of the land, and removed all the idols that his fathers had made.
13And also Maachah his mother, even her he removed from being queen, because she had made an idol in a grove; and Asa destroyed her idol, and burnt it by the brook Kidron

And what did Manasseh do with the idols in the house of God, rededicate them to God?

2 Chronicles 33:12-16
And when he was in affliction, he besought the LORD his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers,
13And prayed unto him: and he was entreated of him, and heard his supplication, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the LORD he was God.
14Now after this he built a wall without the city of David, on the west side of Gihon, in the valley, even to the entering in at the fish gate, and compassed about Ophel, and raised it up a very great height, and put captains of war in all the fenced cities of Judah.
15And he took away the strange gods, and the idol out of the house of the LORD, and all the altars that he had built in the mount of the house of the LORD, and in Jerusalem, and cast them out of the city.
16And he repaired the altar of the LORD, and sacrificed thereon peace offerings and thank offerings, and commanded Judah to serve the LORD God of Israel.

Idols and graven images are to have no part in the worship of the one true Holy Almighty God, He is not flattered by our attempt to excuse or cover the sins of our cities.

This is where were at folks:
Isaiah 66:1-4
Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest?
2For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.
3He that killeth an ox is as if he slew a man; he that sacrificeth a lamb, as if he cut off a dog’s neck; he that offereth an oblation, as if he offered swine’s blood; he that burneth incense, as if he blessed an idol. Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations.
4I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not.

1 Corinthians 10:20-22
But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.
21Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils.
22Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?

To pray a prayer to absolve a lifeless statue of its original intended purpose to worship mother earth, or what ever other god, is lunacy, not a Holy act of redemption, and cleansing. God bless you all…look up for your redemption draweth nigh. Oh, and be on guard my brothers and sisters, there is much done in the name of the Holy Spirit these days that is nothing but ungodly hocus pocus. Truly we are weak and without the true power of the Holy Ghost, we have forsaken the truth of God's word, our faith is in our own works, and we shall perish if this remains so.

I am just rereading a book which I read many years ago, and which the Lord used to help me seek out the baptism of the Holy Spirit, called "Like a Mighty Wind"by Mel Tari. The Holy Spirit descends upon a little Timorese village, just as at Pentecost. One incident which happened in the village was relevant here. The people prayed about the idols in the local Catholic church, and to the priest's anger, the Lord instructed them to bring the statues out into the street for all to see. It was not unlike Elijah at Mt Carmel - where the Lord struck those statues with fire and destroyed them. That is what He thought of them!

AMEN sister Bonny, thank you for sharing, God help us all to keep our eye single and fixed on Christ/Yeshua, not on vain idols, that are dumb, blind and usless.

Helen
It is such a blessing to know that when I need a little help putting all my thoughts to gather I have a friend to call… God helped you to lay it on the line… Some Times I feel like all the Christians have gone nuts…Everywhere we turn there is someone trying to tell us what to think and where to stand… If we Would only stick to the word of God and break loose of all the Doctrines of men we would be in a much better place … The word of God is the solid rock to stand on…If we cling to God we will never go wrong…
Love in Yeshua,
Faith

Sorry Helen, let me clarify my comment - wrote it in a bit of a hurry. The incident I related from the book, pertaining to idolatry may be better understood if I partially reproduce the account. The reference to Elijah was in the sense of proving the One True God versus the idols.

[after the Holy Spirit fell upon the village, the Lord sent the team of villagers to another village over the mountains: Timor, is eastern Indonesia, close to Papua New Guinea and northern Australia. Part of Timor was settled by the Portuguese, hence Catholic]

"When the priest came, he was angry. 'We are Catholic' he said. 'We know about Jesus. Why do you come to us with this message?'
'Because the Lord said you must repent and be saved.'
'We are Christians' the priest insisted.
....'the Lord told us you have idols' they said. 'He is very displeased with idols.'
....'These are not idols' he said indignantly. 'Those are just Paul and Mary and Jesus and John and all other saints.'
'But the Lord told us they are idols'
[after much arguing ] "one of the team members said 'let us ask God to show us if these are idols or not....Do you remember the story in the Bible about Elijah and the Baal priests? Well, let us pray and gather the images and ask the Lord to burn them with fire if He is displeased with them.'
So they gathered all the idols in the middle of the room.....the team prayed that the Lord Himself would give the final decision or proof by burning the pile if He wished.
'....a sharp, crashing bolt of fire - like lightning...hit only the pile of images and burnt them to ashes'

The priest and the church members then ran to get the rest of the statues to burn them, and repented.

(from Mel Tari's 'Like a Mighty Wind' (New Leaf Press, Creation House Publishing 1971)

That is the excerpt I was referring to.

It seems to be something in the human spirit that desires an idol, something we can see, touch, pray to. It is in every culture and religion of the world.

Even the gold ear rings and jewelry given to the Judge of Israel, Gideon were made into a shield and visited and worshipped after God's victory through Gideon. God was not pleased until it was destroyed completely.

Today, in 2008, modern Believers scoff at what we see as stupidity or primitive beliefs by our ancestors. But we are just as, or even more so guilty. Look at the tens of millions of dollars places of worship we have built in metropolitan areas of our nation. The majority of mankind on planet earth live on 25 cents a day; barely eaking out enough to eat and drink. While Christians in Western civilized nations spends millions for structures that are nothing more than religious idols.

Jesus never build a synogogue; He preached and taught in several, but His ministry was on the streets, by the sea shores, in the villiages and cities where the needy and oppressed were.

Protestants and Catholics are each guilty of the same crime against the Christ that gave His very lifeblood so we could live and have eternal life.

Yes, man has always fashioned idols of some sort or another. The ancient Greek and Roman gods were only personifications of human qualities which we worship today, such as wisdom, wealth, power, fortune, beauty etc. We worship the work of our own hands, our own talents...all self. Anything but the True, Living God.
